Call your natural gas supplier. They can give you that information. A line has to be run from your gas line to your fire pit. Then it connects to a gas grate. This is assuming you have natural gas in your home.
Depending on what you want to do, you can spend between $300 and a few thousand. A stock propane fire pit can cost a few hundred dollars, up to about $1,000.
If you're talking about running a gas line out into the yard, converting a fire pit to gas, etc., that will probably cost $500+. There are a lot of variables here. You could probably get it done for about $500-$700, and then add cost depending on how fancy you want to get.

I know that you can buy outdoor fireplaces and fire pits that come with gas ignition. I don't know how you would convert an existing one.
